Choosing Solid Wood
Our furniture is built with solid wood whenever possible. Solid wood gives the finished piece unparalleled beauty and durability. It's not uncommon for custom solid wood furniture to be handed down three or more generations. Most built-ins for homes or offices use solid wood for timeless style and function.
Types of Furniture Wood
There are two major types of wood, softwoods, and hardwoods. Softwood is more prolific and easier to use than hardwood, but hardwood is stronger and lasts longer. Each type of hardwood or softwood provides not just a different finish but some unique characteristics that can make them better suited to different applications. Here are some considerations for each wood type:
Softwoods
-
Douglas Fir - Most commonly used outdoors. It is a fast-growing tree that produces dense wood with a long beautiful straight grain. It is most often used for chairs, benches, or picnic tables as it doesn't split or warp easily in the weather.
-
Cedar - Widely available throughout the world due to its attractive appearance and durability. It is highly resistant to insects, disease, and rot making it especially useful for outdoor furniture. But it also works well indoors for chests, wardrobes and accents. It is easily identified by its distinct scent and rich red tones.
-
Redwood - The tallest tree species in the world and native to western North America. It is extremely durable, dense, and long-lasting. It is resistant to weathering, rot, and pests making it a great candidate for outdoor furniture. It also produces incredibly huge burls (Wooden Knots) for one-of-a-kind tables and accent pieces.
-
Spruce - A coniferous tree native to North America. It is one of the most commonly used woods for indoor furniture. It has a nice long straight grain with few knots and it can easily be manipulated and finished. It's found in many types of furniture including chairs, dressers, tables, hutches, and bed frames. It is also a common veneer for adding a premier finish to cheaper materials.
-
Pine - Another coniferous tree native mainly to the Northern Hemisphere. It is a popular choice for many due to it being abundant, lightweight, and flexible. It is fairly resistant to insects but can be easily broken or damaged if not treated properly. Many like it for creating rustic homes using both logs and planks.

Hardwoods
-
Oak - Native to North America and one of the most common hardwoods available. Their wood is strong and durable, making them great for furniture and construction. Oak is also known for its rich color and distinctive grain pattern.
-
Cherry - Cherry trees have been cultivated since ancient times primarily for their fruit. Today they are just as often grown for their beautiful bark and timber with a nice red tone. It is not the strongest of the hardwoods but it does produce ornate tables and chairs or just about any other type of furniture.
-
Maple - Maple trees originate from Canada and are often used for syrup production as well as hardwoods. They produce soft, straight-grained wood ideal for musical instruments and fine furniture.
-
Sycamore - Native to North America, sycamore trees are decidous and produce a dense, straight-grained timber. Often used in fine furniture and cabinetry, it is incredibly hard and tough making it an excellent choice for custom indoor pieces.
-
Black Walnut - Black walnuts are native to eastern North America. They are evergreen trees that produce a bittersweet nut. Black walnut timber is extremely desirable for furniture due to it being straight, strong, and clean-grained. It is used to make all kinds of fine furniture as well as many other things such as gunstocks, oars, and flooring. Most black walnut is grown in orchards and is rarely harvested wild, the timber is often used for veneer as well.
Benefits of Wood Furniture
The biggest benefit of wood furniture is that it is extremely durable. Wooden furniture is known to last hundreds of years or several generations if properly cared for. The other big benefit of wood furniture is its natural luster. Many people prefer true wooden furniture over other types simply because they feel it looks beautiful and feels solid.
Caring for Your Custom Furniture
To keep your new wood furniture looking great, you need to take proper care of it. You should clean your wood furniture regularly. If you have pets, make sure to keep them away from your custom furniture lest they scratch or leak on it. Also, try not to leave any food or drink on your furniture. These things can permanently mar the finish of your furniture.
