Preparing for Tile Installation
The first step for a tile project is to clean the area out so proper measurements can be taken. Assume you will need to order enough tile to cover the square footage plus about 15-20% more to cover breakage and offcuts. We will also ensure the surface is as level as possible to prevent breakage or uneven joints. Any areas that will be seeing large amounts of water such as showers will also need proper footing and drainage to prevent water damage or flooding.
Tile Installation
We'll want to remove any and all dirt, debris, and loose material that could get stuck in the mortar. Surfaces must be as clean as possible to get maximum tile adherence. Once clean we apply a thin layer of mortar and then lay tile backing on the entire surface. Once the backing has set for at least 24 hours we spread more mortar and start cutting and applying tiles to the surface. Then we wait at least another 24 hours for everything to dry.
Tile Grout
Tile grouting is the process of filling the joints between tiles. It's done to keep water out of the joint space and prevent moisture damage. There are two types of grouts: epoxy and cement. Cement grouts are most common due to their relatively low cost and finish appearance. Epoxy grouts are often more expensive but offer better water repellence making tilework last longer. We can discuss the pros and cons and recommend the best solution for your project.
Sealer Application
After the grout has dried completely, we'll seal any cement grout to protect it from staining. We'll also apply caulk around the perimeter of any tiled surfaces to prevent moisture seepage.
