Deck Materials

One of the first things to figure out when considering a new deck or replacing an old one is what type of materials should be used.

There are many different types of finishes out there for decks, and each has its pros and cons:

  • Wood Decks. A popular choice due to their finish and cost. However, wood decks require regular maintenance and don't last nearly as long as other options.

  • Vinyl Decks. Increasingly popular over the years due to their ease of installation, upkeep, and long lifespan but they are also a premium material quickly pumping the cost per square foot.

  • Composite Decking. The newest option on the market. It offers a great blend between wood and vinyl due to its high-quality construction and ease of care. But it doesn't last quite as long as vinyl and can become damaged by heavy impacts.

Important Decking Considerations

When choosing to install a deck, it's extremely important to consider its future. If a deck is not built properly for its intended use you may end up replacing it sooner than you had planned.

Here are some important questions to consider with your deck:

  • Durability. How long are you hoping the deck will last? How extreme are the weather conditions in your area?

  • Appearance. What kind of look do you want for your new deck? Do you prefer a rustic, natural style or something more modern?

  • Maintenance. Does the material require regular maintenance? If so, how often should it be maintained and are you prepared to keep up with it?

  • Safety. How safe is the material and construction? Will children be playing on the deck? Will it be a space for pets?

  • Strength. How much weight will the deck need to bear? Are you planning on setting a hot tub or pool on it?

Decking & Patio Enclosures

Sometimes you want a bit of extra privacy, security, or just some added comfort on your deck. Clean Grain Carpentry can build you a custom deck or porch enclosure that meets all your needs. Our enclosures can make it feel like you have added an extra room to your building at a fraction of the cost of a traditional building expansion.

There are several options for what we could build:

  • Screen Room. Allows you to maximize the summer and keep pests out of your outdoor activities.

  • Three-Season Enclosure. Great if you are looking for a little more protection from the wind, rain, and cold.

  • Four-Season Deck Enclosure. Allows you to enjoy your room all day, every day, no matter the weather outside. We will build the space to be thermally insulated for efficient heating and cooling.

Professional Decking Benefits

Building decks that are safe and stable is extremely challenging. Also, the higher a deck is off the ground, the more complex it is to properly build and support it. It's often an afterthought, but deciding where and how to access the deck and where to place that access can quickly complicate the project. Landscaping and skirting may be needed as well to help hide the framing, posts, and joists. Stair railings and balustrades are another must on a raised deck and add to the cost and complexity of the project.

Decks almost always increase the appeal and comfort of your property but planning and building one yourself is extremely demanding. Contact us at Clean Grain Carpentry and we can work with you to build the deck you have always wanted that will last a lifetime.
